Bundy School

The Bundy School is one of numerous historic registry buildings owned by the District of Columbia Government. The building is to be converted to a child advocacy center (a center for abused and neglected children).
The District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) has been our clients for over twelve years. We sought to redefine the role of design in public buildings. Budget constraints, red tape and attitudes are some of the challenges we had to overcome.
The new center will hosts US Federal lawyers, State lawyers, counselors, doctors and nurses and police investigators. This is a very formal and legal group.
Our approach was to convince the client, through thorough design detailing, that good design did not necessarily mean expensive design. The idea for the building was to soften the impact of an institutional building on an already traumatized child through color and play of form and light.
