African Market

Port Harcourt, Nigeria

The Port Harcourt International Market is an idea brought about by the Rivers State Government and set in motion by Brunel Engineering. The big idea is to decongest the old city and build a new city in close proximity with the old and with the bustling commercial center that is Aba in the adjacent Abia State.

The African Market is the central courtyard of this one hundred and fifty hectare development. The design recalls the African "grain storage" hut; the genesis of movement of food to the market. It is both familiar and functional.

When given the basic ingredients to create architecture our hands are forced into designing what is compatible with the inherent requirements set by this order.
