Kainji Condos

Abuja, Nigeria

In partnership with Ken Arch.

This building has a simple parti that has grown into a classic contemporary building devoid of decoration yet striking in appearance. The two boxes in plan are invaded by a curved screen wall at the west box and a straight screen wall at the east box.

The screen walls serve dual purposes: they break the monotony of the boxes and they also serve as sun screens in the buildings' main north facade.

The curved screen leads the visitor and occupants alike, to the main entrance, hidden but visible, as the senses are pulled in and guided by the curved screen. The screen appears and disappears throughout the building, noticed in some cases just as bulkheads in space and in others as a surprising sculpture.
